Medallion (Center-Oriented) Layouts
Medallion quilts have a central focus block that is surrounded by blocks, spacers, or borders on all or some of the side. Here are 5 examples of medallion style layouts that use a variety of strategies.

Focus Block
The focus block can be a pieced block, appliqué block, or a printed fabric such as a photo transfer, a panel, or a digital print. The focus block can be any shape to start and then made into a square or rectangle by adding shapes as shown below.

Setting
The setting of the focus block will determine and final size and shape of the quilt. A square focus block can remain a square quilt or made into a rectangular quilt. A rectangular focus block can remain a rectangle quilt or be made into a square quilt.
