Testing the Design
Whether you are using your own design or have bought a design, ALWAYS do a sample cut and sew test. Before I cut multiple copies of a design, I make a cutting plan with all the shapes in the block. I use this cutting plan to cut out 2 blocks with different fabrics. I flip flop the shapes to create 2 blocks that are opposites, as I did here with the 5-pointed star.
Before I sew it, I measure each shape to make sure it is the correct size.
I make sure that all the edge notches and needle notches match up.
Reasons for failure:
-
The design was not sized correctly after uploading to the graphic design software or laser operating software.
-
The design was inadvertently modified in the graphic design software.
-
There is a mistake in the design.
If all the shapes look correct, I sew the block. After sewing, I measure the block. If the block does not measure just right, I check my seams. Did I sew my seams accurately? I sew the second block. Measure the block.
